As we mark our anniversary, it's hard not to reflect on just how much the UK defined benefit (DB) pension landscape has changed over the last 40 years.
Date: 4 November 2026
Back in the mid-1980s, DB schemes were the gold standard. Strong investment returns, growing workforces and relatively predictable life expectancy meant most schemes were focused on growth rather than risk management.
Then came a succession of events that reshaped the industry:
The headlines often focus on funding, regulation and investment markets, but technology has also played an important a role in reshaping the industry.
Back in the 1980s, pension administration was largely paper-based. Benefit calculations were often manual, member records sat in filing cabinets, and trustee meetings relied on stacks of reports delivered by post.
Fast forward 40 years and the transformation has been remarkable.
The DB pensions industry of 2026 would be almost unrecognisable to someone working in the sector 40 years ago. Over four decades, we've seen the industry evolve from one centred on benefit design and investment growth to one focused on governance, risk management, funding resilience and member security. Technology has transformed how we manage schemes, analyse risk, engage members and make decisions.
However, what's remained constant is the industry's commitment to delivering long-term retirement security for millions of members.
At a time of increased uncertainty, Cartwright offered an approach that understood the issues we face and the challenges of the future. Cartwright has been our partner on this journey from the start offering a solution that will help us face the future with a great deal of increased confidence. I would wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone thinking about investments in the charity sector.
